Queensland

There is a thin dispersal of population over the region. With 54 percent of its land and more than one fifth of its people located north of the Tropic of Capricorn, Queensland has faced the challenge of a tropical zone. A state which is 2.5 times larger than the U. S. state of Texas.

Land

The eastern third of the state has extensive exposures of granite and mineralized metamorphic rocks with the boldest topography very close to the seaboard. In sharp contrast to the vast inland plains of low tablelands and ranges.

Flora and Fauna

Its habitat diversity and its position in relation to migrations of species, Queensland has the greatest diversity of animal species of any state. These include more than 70 species of marsupials, 47 species of bats, 79 species of snakes and 600 bird species. It also includes the Great Barrier Reef, which is a World Heritage site, being the world's largest structure created by living organisms.

Cultural

The state has the highest proportion of Australian born residents. The "outdoor" image is coupled with a high proportion of Australian's leading novelists, dramatists, poets, painters, and musicians who were either born in Queensland or lived there for extended periods.
